Christened Lesley Elizabeth Mary Cole, Elly was born into a family of death-bed Catholics on Friday, March 8, 1957 at West Middlesex Hospital in England, along with a bunch of other people you’ve never heard of. This is the same day Egypt reopened the Suez Canal, and four months before John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time at a fete in Liverpool in July of that year; her birth having had no bearing on either of those events.
Elly had no choice but to attend the Bishop Perrin Church of England School in Whitton, Middlesex during her primary school years. A recently discovered online article from the Richmond & Twickenham Times had revealed that the school had hosted a reunion in the summer of 2011; and where everyone apparently had a real “groovy time” no less, and to which Elly was never invited. Nevertheless, she did want to take this opportunity to say that while she was momentarily crushed, she has bounced back, moved on, and there are no hard feelings.
Following a move to Hanworth, she was then funneled through the secondary modern education system care of Feltham Comprehensive, from which she had eventually drifted away sometime during 1972, or thereabouts, and no doubt encouraged by the schools’ motto which was—and further research suggests still is—seize the day! So, she thought “why not?” And, so she did. Despite a now truncated formal education, an ability to type fast—and well—at least guaranteed a series of soul sucking office jobs thereafter, thus avoiding the need to fill out a UB40.
Elly arrived in California in 1984, and she still likes it. Resuming her education at the age of 40, she became a mum at 42, and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Psychology from Pepperdine University in May 2009.
Elly wrote and published her first book at the age of 62, and she can hear her late Mum saying "it's about bloody time!"
